Acute bronchitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane that makes up the lining of the bronchi or main passageways of the lungs. When you contract a respiratory infection, you may develop acute bronchitis because the same viruses and colds that cause colds and sore throat will then get into the bronchi.
This is not usually a problem for those of us with a healthy heart and lungs. We normally get well in a few days. This is different than chronic forms of bronchitis in which the condition doesn’t clear up and the illness lingers on for months or even years.
What are the symptoms of acute bronchitis? The main one is a deep cough bringing up grayish or yellowish phlegm or sputum from the lungs. One may also experince breathlessness, wheezing, and even a fever. There is sometimes pain in the upper chest that increases with more coughing.
Almost all of us contract the acute form of bronchitis at times. Non-smokers may develop this disease every few years while smokers or people living in very polluted areas get the disease more easily and more often. A smoker who has asthma is more susceptable to acute bronchitis. People who suffer from lung congestion due to heart failure, you are very susceptable to acute bronchitis.
Most cases of acute bronchitis are due to viral infections. If you have a fever, you can take aspirin several times daily to relieve the fever. Cough medicine may help and you should stay home and in a warm room. A vaporizer in the room will help to clear the nasal and bronchi tubes. If you feel breathless or have over 101degress fever, call your doctor. If you repeatedly contract acute bronchitis, consider a different job or home.
Acute bronchitis is something many of have to endure at times. But, if you are a smoker or work in a harsh environment, you can expect to suffer more than is neccessary. Consider quiting smoking. That is the best preventative to avoiding lung diseases such as acute bronchitis. Ask others not to smoke in your home or car. You have that right.
