Is Bronchitis Contagious

Is bronchitis contagious? Since bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi, and can be caused by a number of factors, the answer is that you can not get bronchitis from someone just because they have it. They may suffer from bronchitis due to smoking or heart condition. That would not be contagious. However, the person may have bronchitis due to a lung or throat infection caused by something communicable such as a virus or bacteria. In those situations, risk of passing on an illness is possible and should be prevented.

Many times, people are not passing the condition to others, but the harsh environment is causing others in the same work group to develop lung problems. If you work in a polluted atmosphere, you can expect over time to suffer lung problems. Wearing a respirator may help, but you may need to change jobs. Dust can cause problems for you lungs as can other pollutants such as paint thinners, solvents, furniture stripper solutions, and even automoble exhaust.

Bronchitis is often contracted as a result of smoking. And, tests indicate that even second hand smoke can lead to serious lung problems and even death. The air you breath must be clean. While smoking has been eliminated in many public places, it is still a problem at home. And, even with automobiles burning cleaner than before, there are so many of them on the road that we still have big pollution problems in most large cities. Home air cleaners will help with reducing dust and other pollutants in the home, but Mother Nature is left alone to clean our outside air supply.

Practice good hygiene when in public to avoid contracting bacteria and viruses from others that may cause you to develop acute bronchitis. Watch out for sneezing, coughing individuals and wash your hands often. Door handles, table tops, restroom doors and faucet handles are all prime locations for you to pick up bacteria and viral infections left by others. If you think you have an illness that is contagious, consider others and stay at home. Get some rest and get well.
